Here at South County we use Vacuum or suction cupping with hard plastic cups. Vacuum cupping Therapy was popularized at the Olympics but has been used long before to decrease muscle soreness, reduce adhesion and increase blood flow. This is done by lifting up layers of tissue bringing cellular debris to the surface to be flushed out by new blood. Vacuum cupping will only be used on musculoskeletal injuries or areas of tightness where there are no signs of acute inflammation. This can leave marks on the skin (pictured below) in areas where there is poor circulation. Instrument Assististed Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) is used to reduce adhesions, improve range of motion, decrease muscle soreness, increase blood flow, produce movement of fluids in the injured area by applying external pressure and movement with the use of a soft tissue instrument. Red petechiae (small red dots) are an expected outcome of effective treatment and should not be confused with bruising.
